One project that most students that go to the Art Institute of Philadelphia end up coming to is to design a cookbook. But rather than just create something to highlight organizational prowess with InDesign, I also wanted to have a strong, consistent theme and visual appearance throughout my book. I chose an Alice in Wonderland theme, and set about the daunting task of creating a list of some thirty-odd recipe names related to Alice for the table of contents.

Many elements from Alice were pulled into the book such as the playing card symbols, the chess pieces and board, the tea party, and the potions. The piece came together in exactly the way I wanted, which was to be both fun and functional.

The challenge for this assignment was a hypothetical advertisement campaign for a renowned distributor of high-end furniture, my group was tasked with finding innovative ways to capture customer attention. Mixing both methods of both print and environmental advertising tactics, I developed several concepts that would focus on the striking visual impact and visual identity associated with several of Design Within Reach’s top pieces.

Concepts included a train/bus shelter that would include a mock-up of one of DWR’s signature lamps hanging from the roof and shining down the company’s logo, alongside an illuminated photo of the same piece. My second concept included a park display banner with lamp pole toppers fashioned to look like another of DWR’s signature lamps. The pamphlet showcasing the LC2 series of sofas would include a transparency of the couch and a sample photo of any empty living room. Customers could arrange the couch on the picture, or use one of their own home to get a feel of how the furniture would look in their own space.
